Cook-words, what is it?

Cook-words is a literacy and numeracy project which aims to make families aware of the importance of knowing how to read in order to eat well.

hrough a series of cooking workshops, children, accompanied by a parent or another adult, are encouraged to cook simple, nutritious and tasty recipes in order to develop their cooking skills.

Through the fun aspect of cooking, the Literacy Foundation wishes to promote reading among children and their families.

Educational and accessible workshops

The Cook-words project has been adapted to allow a greater number of families to participate in the workshops.

Ainsi, les activités culinaires sont offertes de deux manières distinctes.

Face-to-face

Community organizations and adult education centres in Quebec have the option of organizing culinary activities and receiving participating families in their facilities. A chef from La Tablée des Chefs is then invited on site to lead the workshops during which two recipes are prepared. An employee from the organization is also on site to support the chef in facilitating the workshops.

Virtually

Community organizations and adult education centres in Quebec also have the option of offering culinary activities virtually. The workshops, accessible on the Lära platform, are led by a chef from La Tablée des Chefs and a primary school teacher. Each workshop includes a recipe to cook as well as interactive quizzes and educational videos to enhance the experience of participating families.

The project is deployed through three culinary workshops which include:

  • An educational component devoted to reading and understanding the recipes, which is coordinated by a counselor.
  • A culinary component led by a professional chef from La Tablée des Chefs specially trained for the project.

Who can participate in the Cook-words workshops?

Cook-words is for children aged 6 to 12 as well as their parents or other adults part of their entourage. The workshops are provided with the support of community organizations and adult education centres located across Quebec.
